All of us are familiar with this four- letter distressing word which is also known as pimples in common man language. Majority of us are either suffering or has suffered in past from this skin ailment. Our elders used to co- relate it with adolescent & as per them it will subside on its own. But is it true? I don’t know how many of you agree with this but I have seen many adults with active acne and intractable distressing acne scars resulting in their low self-esteem. Let’s talk about it in details to understand ACNE & ACNE SCARS? Before that let me introduce myself, I am Dr. Astuty Apurwa, chief dermatologist and co- founder of Rejuvenaids, one stop centre for skin and plastic surgery.
Acne is a common skin condition characterized by pimples occurring over areas like face, shoulders, back, and neck. Although acne is most common among teenagers (80% of total patients are teenagers) it can also affect people of all ages and causing emotional distress and scarring not only their skin but also their soul.
Acne occurs when the sebaceous gland opening becomes plugged with oil, dead skin cells, dirt, and debris. They further get infected by a bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes which causes pus formation and pain. Acne can present itself as whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules or cyst formation. In some cases, acne can lead to formation of large painful infected nodules under the skin, which is squeezed by many people making it more complicated and leave permanent scars when they eventually heal.
The most common cause of acne is hormonal changes, occurring in teenage which causes excessive and altered sebum (oil) production. Sebum is a natural oil that stops your skin from drying out, and is produced by tiny sebaceous gland attached to your hair follicles. When the altered sebum mixes with dead skin cells it blocks the pores. This along with secondary bacterial infection leads to formation of acne.
Acne is a common skin condition that can affect anyone at any stage in their life. It often occurs earlier in girls than boys, and affects 80% of teenagers. 35% of this teenage population ends up with preventable permanent scarring.
Adult acne can occur later in life. Women are especially vulnerable due to hormonal changes in pregnancy, menses, menopause or due to use of OCP. It can also be a result of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which are more difficult to treat and requires prolonged treatment.
Most common type of acne is mainly linked to hormonal changes. Sebum secretion is increased during periods of excessive hormone secretion and can affect person of any age. It is important to add medication to regulate this hormonal imbalance apart from localised acne treatment for sustainable and effective treatment.
This represents most severe form of acne. The large size of the sebaceous glands leading to excess sebum production and the proliferation of bacteria play a major role. It also manifests itself in the form of painful purulent lesions with high capacity to develop permanent scar. It is one of the commonest causes of depression and lack of self confidence among young individuals.
This is the most characteristic visible lesion of active acne. The increase in sebum production obstructs the skin pores and favours the appearance of comedones. Microdermabrasion and chemical peeling and physical extraction may be needed to alleviate pore obstruction apart from medical management.
Prevails from the age of 25 onwards. It is more common in women and is usually associated with hormonal changes or stress. It manifests around the mouth as prolific papules accompanied with inflammation. It usually gets aggravated during menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause or use of OCP.
Acne usually appears as small lesions on the face, chest, upper back, and shoulders. Signs of acne can vary from person to person, few of which are mentioned below:
Although known as disease of teenagers, it can affect person of any age especially women during menstruation, pregnancy, menopause and use of oral contraceptive pills. At, Rejuvenaids Dr. Astuty Apurwa (board-certified dermatologist) will assess the root cause to make a comprehensive customized plan for best result.

Many people believes that vigorous frequent scrubbing to remove impurities in the skin will help them to get rid of their acne but this is actually more likely to damage your face. The majority of acne begins below the surface of the skin, so harsh scrubbing could actually make it worse. At Rejuvenaids, Dr Astuty Apurwa (board-certified dermatologist) will thoroughly asses your skin type to decide best cleanser agent for your skin and she will do proper counselling regarding frequency and method to use it.
Acne is not a contagious skin infection & it does not spread from person to person. This is a common myth simply because of acne bacteria. However, for general hygiene purposes, Dr Astuty Apurwa (board-certified dermatologist) do not promote idea to share a towel or pillow with someone else if you have acne.
Toothpaste will not clear your pimples and it is not safe for your skin. At Rejuvenaids, Dr Astuty Apurwa (board-certified dermatologis) do not promote it as fluorides in toothpaste irritate inflammed skin and may further worsen your acne. Another ingredient that is often used in toothpaste is sodium lauryl sulfate which can be too harsh for inflamed skin in pimples by irritating your skin.

Untreated or chronic acne will result in permanent scarring which is much difficult to treat as well as more expensive than treating acne itself. Nodular acne has more propensity for irreversible scarring than any other form. Teenagers have common tendency of squeezing active acne in frustration which makes it more susceptible for secondary infection and finally intractable scar. Hence it is always advisable to get your acne treated at earliest instead of taking it lightly as normal sign of adolescent as explained by our elders.
