Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is also known as man boobs or male breast, refers to enlargement of the breast tissues in Males. Overgrowth of male breast tissue affects up to 30% of men and can cause significant distress. The condition is thought to arise due to an imbalance between testosterone and oestrogen hormone levels in the male body, which can occur for many reasons – although for most patients a cause is never identified. However, sometimes it may be due to use of steroids /gym supplements containing steroids. Prolonged use of few medicines and some cancerous condition has been found to be associated with it. Hence, proper history and thorough physical examination along with necessary investigations is required to reach final conclusion and find the root cause of gynecomastia. Medications can be tried in selective cases but majority of patients will require surgery. Here at Rejuvenaids, we offer Liposuction with or without VASER along with Excision of gland as treatment protocol. Gynecomastia might be due to pure fat deposits (Psedo Gynecomastia) or because of gland enlargement (True Gynecomastia) or both. Best way to determine the cause of enlargement of chest is by a proper physical examination by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon.

Based on clinical presentation there are 4 grades of Gynecomastia which need to be treated differently which will be decided by your surgeon after proper examination. Following treatment modality can be selected:

Only Liposuction:

If breast enlargement is mainly due to fat only or soft gland which can be aspirated through liposuction canula. This procedure is almost scarless. Liposuction can be aided with energy devices like VASER/ULTRAVASE for organized fat deposit.

Surgical excision of gland along with Liposuction:

It is performed if breast enlargement is mainly due glandular element. In such cases gland needs to be removed through a small subareolar cut i.e at junction where normal skin meets with areolar skin so that scar is almost invisible once healing is complete.

It can be performed under Local Anaesthesia if breast enlargement is mainly due to fat. However, if there is marked enlargement of the gland, which requires surgical excision, we prefer General Anaesthesia.

It usually takes about 1-2 hrs for the procedure, depending on the grade of Gynecomastia that you have.

If performed under local anaesthesia pt can be discharged 2-4 hour after surgery on the same day. If done under G.A pt need to stay for at least 6-8 hrs after surgery before going home. After discharge we will oral medications for 5-7 days. We use absorbable stiches which absorbs on its own and need not to be removed.

If surgery is performed by an experienced and skilled plastic surgeon, the scars although exist but almost invisible after 6 months to 1 year.

The recovery is fairly smooth and fast. There will be some swelling and bruising after the procedure which will exist for 7-10. You need to start wearing a pressure garment for 1-3 months post procedure for perfect result. Pressure garment need to be customized for every patient for better result. You will be free to do regular activities post-surgery from next day but strenuous exercises should be avoided for three weeks. The final results will be visible after around 3 months.
