Vitiligo is a skin condition in which areas of the skin become white due to loss of normal pigmentation. The involved skin itself does not become itchy or sore rather, it feels completely normal. Vitiligo can occur in any part of body but the common areas for vitiligo include eyes, lips, nose, within body folds such as under the arms and in the groin as well as the hands and face. Even hair can be affected by vitiligo leading to complete loss of its colour. Vitiligo can be a bothersome skin disease for sufferers which can affects his/her self- worth, self-esteem and self-image. Although there is no physical disability associated with this condition, at Rejuvenaids, we observe the discomfort this condition causes to a person psychologically. Vitiligo occurs in approximately 1% of the population. While it can appear at any age, about half of the cases begin before the patient turns 20 years of age. It affects men and women of every race equally although its appearance is more prominent in people with darker complexions or tanned skin. This skin condition does have much hereditary link although about 20% of cases may have a family history. Person with autoimmune conditions e.g hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis etc are at increased risk of developing vitiligo.
Vitiligo is considered to be an autoimmune condition. Our own immune system act against melanocyte cells in skin that produce the melanin pigment. When the melanocytes are no longer present, it presents as white patches known as vitiligo. These white patches in vitiligo often occurs in symmetry.
Vitiligo is not a contagious disease and it does not spread from one person to other with human contact.
There is no substantial medical evidence of direct link of vitiligo with a patient’s diet.
